“If a mother has access to a midwife, a mother should not have to die.”
Mama Zeena, Training Coordinator at Merlin-supported midwifery school, Liberia.
And Mama Zeena should know. She's been helping women to deliver their babies for years, whether in a refugee camp in Kenya or in a clinic in South Sudan. Now based in a remote corner of Liberia, Mama Zeena's skills are being used to train the midwives needed to give rural Liberian women access to the care that can save their lives.
And not before time - maternal mortality rates have risen by 74 per cent in Liberia since the civil war ended in 2003.
Mama Zeena is launching our new report - All Mothers Matter - calling for urgent reallocation of health funding to pay for the health workers needed to ensure pregnant women living in countries in crisis are not simply left to die.
